On Monday I went for breakfast to Ned's , the nearest thing South Yarra has to a French corner bistro. But better range of breakfast food. But I haven't tried their croissants. I spent a long time pottering around the Botanic gardens , including time talking to my sister in law in Perth. Leisurely lunch in the Grdens Cafe then that was enough for the day.
Today I did more. I spent time looking at the paintings in the NGV. I donot like the way the rooms are odd shaped and some rooms are inside other rooms. Still there were some interesting paintings. Then I went to a contemporary art gallery , an odd shaped brown metal structure with one woman's works. Paintings with added material bits about identity etc . I did not stay long.
Then to the Shrine of Rembrance., which I found quite moving. I spent quite a while looking at stuff . Lots of memorabilia from both world wars that i skipped over. There was a section on war graves , in particular the care that went into the design of the one in Yokahama. This was interesting.
Amongst the WW1 stuff there was a section on the padres that went to europe with their guys , some of them into the line of fire , against strict orders, with their men. Hmm. I know what my daughter would do. I also watched a video of a group of soldiers in Afghanistan who were being fired at. One of the guys who was there was describing his emotions. Then I looked at the date the video was taken and I am pretty sure it was when my son in law was there. That was enough for me for the day. I even caught a tram back. The extra walking has disturbed my arthriticy big toe.
