End of Sydney holiday

Monday: I went to the Museum of Contemporary Art  primarily to see the exhibition of Grayson Perry's work. According to the blurb he is one of main artists in Britain at the moment. Most of  his varied work had a go at some aspect of modern society.

After lunch I went to an exhibition of Lloyd Rees' drawings.

Tuesday : I caught several buses to the Spit Bridge, had breakfast overlooking the water then walked to Manly along the path through varied vegetation with many different spots to view the harbour. After pottering in Manly I sat and looked at the ocean for a bit ( and  to let the perspiration on my shirt dry in the wind before I went into a place for lunch) then had lunch overlooking more water.

Wednesday I pottered and had a massage in the afternoon.

Thursday : I caught the bus home. It is good to be home.

Sydney week 4

Tuesday : Drizzling rain  or heavier most of the day.  I caught the bus to Central then walked through the main part of Surrey Hills. I had breakfast soon after I got to Surrey hills which meant that I was  bit too early for some of the quirky little design shops . Lots did not open till 11.  I caught a bus to Centennial Parklands and found the labyrinth and walked slowly around it. Waiting for the bus home was interesting. The bus didnot come and didnot come and the rain got heavier and heavier. I had my  good knee length jacket on, but my jeans below the knee were drenched when the bus finally came. It was almost full of completely dry people. I found it very difficult not to drip water onto people . Everyone was looking at me as if I had done something wrong. Who knows what I was meant to do.

Wednesday:  I met my cousins other daughter at Parramatta , we had breakfast and then wandered around looking at old buildings, the park with Old Government House in and more old buildings. It was a very pleasant morning. In the afternoon I met a friend for coffee who used to live in Canberra but now lives in a nearby suburb.

Thursday: I went by bus to Alexandria , another suburb that is being reinvented. I had breakfast at a large cafe in a sort of garden centre which also had a pig and some cooks.  I went to a design place which I think sells my 2 new kitchen stools, then to the White Rabbit in Chippendale.  It specialises in contemporary Chinese art and was fascinating. On the way home I walked down what is called the Goods Line. It is a smaller, non elevated, version of the High Line in NYC. It does go past the new Frank Gerry building that I wanted to see. It goes roughly from Central to the Powerhouse Museum along a disused old goods rail line with nice public spaces. I had dinner in the Balmain home, of my niece.

Friday:  bus to Coogee , walk to almost Bondi,  put on rain jacket after rolling up my trouser legs, walked smugly in teeming rain past many people huddled together in the rock overhangs, had a nice fish lunch overlooking the beach and the still teaming rain.

Saturday: Pottered in Glebe.

Sunday: Thought I better have another go at buying a few bits of clothing that fit me better than most of my stuff.  I wandered into David Jones, was idly looking at a shirt in the Sportscraft section, was approached by a lady who was really helpful, kept bringing me different sizes and colours of things, giving me honest opinions and I walked out with more than I had gone in for and  what was very good, didnot have to look anywhere else. I did go to a few more shops that I had been told about, had lunch and came home.

Sydney week 3

Sunday:  Noel arrived at lunch time and we caught the bus to Vaucluse House and pottered around the rooms. Most enjoyable. Walked to Watsons Bay, fish and chips, ferry back to Circular Quay.  Very picturesque, travelling into the setting sun. We watched a huge, monstrous cruise ship negotiating it's way out of its birth and onto it's journey.

Monday: We went ( train to gosford then hire car) to visit a cousin of Noels who I had not met and then a schoolfriend  of mine and her husband.

Tuesday: Maritime Museum. We wandered over the submarine, destroyer, patrol boat and the tall ship and looked at the Shackleton exhibition. In the evening we went to the Opera, Pearl fishers.

Wednesday : We pottered around some of Glebes old buildings and Noel went home in the afternoon.

Thursday: Wendy was in town and I spent most of the day pottering around the city with her.

Friday : After morning tea with one of my Frivolous Friends, I went to the museum of Sydney.  Before looking at any exhibits, I had a delicious relaxed lunch. After lunch, I  decided I did not want to tax my holidaying brain so went to look at patterns in a wool shop instead.

Saturday : I loitered over breakfast, caught up with my photos, then walked to the fish markets for lunch and a leisurely walk home via Black wattle Bay and some different streets.

Sunday : I visited my cousin and her husband  at Katoomba in their new house.

Monday: I visited my cousins daughter and her young family in the morning, then went to Milsons Point for a nice luncH.  I wanted to have a ride on the ferris wheel at Luna Park, but the cheapest ticket I could buy was for 2 rides, so I went on the carousel as well.  The ferris wheel was ok , nice views but the carousel was ordinary. The horses did not have names like the lovely one I went on in NY. As I was sitting looking toward the harbour bridge from my lunch table I watched  68 people walk or jog past . Of theses, 46 had no hat, 6 people had a sun visor, and only 16 h ad a hat or cap on.

Sydney week 2

Another hot week, with one heavy shower on Tuesday.

Firstly, an omission from last week.  I saw the Sydney Theatre Company's production of Tom Stoppard's play Arcadia. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Monday : I looked at the War memorial in Hyde Park then walked down Oxford St to the Jewish Museum. I was interested in a time line they had around a room  with Jewish history on the top, history of the rest of the world on the bottom. The 2 are usually separate in my mind . The feeling of the Holocaust part of the museum   was not 'poor us' , rather 'let's not let other evil things happen'.  I continued down Oxford St to Paddington and was interested in the Paddington Reservoir, an interesting conversion of a derelict water storage facility to pleasant seating, pools of water,  tropical plants, shade.

Tuesday:  I caught the ferry to Cremore Point, walked around the water's edge to Mosman for morning tea, got rained on, around to Taronga Park for early lunch,  along to Bradley 's Head then onto Clifton Gardens for late lunch ( the rest of a large salad ) then along to Chowder Heads and across to Balmoral for coffee and bus back. About 12 km walk which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Wednesday: Not such a successful day. I thought I would like to look in some shops, went to David Jones and decided I didnot want to be there. Too much of everything - people, noise, things to buy, glitter. So I came home to my ordinary little flat in Glebe. In the evening I went back into town for a concert performed by the Australian Branden burg Orchestra  and featuring the amazing recorder player Maurice Street. It was great.

Thursday : I pottered round Chippendale. I wandered the streets - the usual terraces, mostly small, some done up, some arty little shops, some cafes, some doneup commercial places usually with plain exteriors, no windows, painted dark grey with either yellow or red highlights. I looked in the new Central Park shopping and residential place, a new building on Broadway with lots of greenery on the outside. I looked at the redone Old Clare Hotel and the nearby laneways.

Friday: I went to Pyrmont and continued walking around the Harbour from where I stopped the previous Saturday. Round to Darling Harbour, King St wharves, then the new Barangaroo,  a lovely space, then around to Circular Quay. I caught a ferry to Balmain and then a bus back to my doorstep (almost). In the evening I went to Naremburn for dinner at the home of my cousin and his wife. Very enjoyable.

Saturday : No sightseeing, just a walk along different Glebe streets to the fish
Markets for lunch and a walk around Black wattle Bay to a cafe for a t/a coffee which I had on a bench in the shade a bit further on and watched some dragon boaters training.
