Stavanger

We woke up in a different port again. A funny feeling. Stavanger is the 3rd biggest city in Norway and has been dubbed the oil capital. The morning tour was good. An interesting British woman who came in 1990 with a 3yr and a baby and her husband and is still here. Similar to lots of places - old Port with old buildings for cod and herring processing and storage now upmarket restaurants and shops. Old workers cottages now upmarket housing and craft outlets. An old cathedral being restored.very interesting museum about the oil industry. Models of the first oil rigs right up to the latest round, Goliat, anchored but sort of floating so that it can withstand the huge waves of the Barents Sea which can be more huge than in the North Sea.

On most days on this ship there is a lecture on a topic relevant to our current location and there is a port talk on each of the ports. These are all available to watch later on our TV. We watched several in the afternoon. One called Viking lands between catholicism and the reformation and one on the Geohistory of Norway. Previously we had watched one on the Hanseatic league. We also watched several port talks. The presenters were very good.

The lectures sound really interesting. Did you get to eat any herring or cod?
