Not raining – sometimes sunny – see first 2 photos
Ca in Venetian is a palace – a huge house. This one is Baroque and, while it is now a museum, still has lots of the original furniture. Some rooms have a description of what they were used for. At one stage in its life it was owned by Robert Browning. One of my books said it had an exhibition of clothing – I could not find it. I saw the most amazing piece of furniture / staue/decoration that I have seen for ages. It was over 6ft high and about 3ft wide in ebony and rosecoloured wood of varying beautifully carved people and animals and some of these people were holding Chinese vases of different shapes and sizes at all sorts of odd angles – the vases were not all upright. It was most odd.
I went into a church that had a whole series of Tintoretto paintings about the life of San Rocco – the guy from Tuesday’s Scuola. Legend has it that he survived the plague and somehow that gave him miraculous healing powers and hence he became the patron saint of infectious diseases. That did not help him being captured in a battle and dying in prison.
I went to San Giacomo dell’Orio – one of the oldest churches in Venice, dating from the 9th century. It has been added to off and on since then, but it is still sort of homely, not lavish and gawdy (to my taste) like some . I had lunch out and then wandered back here.
I forgot – on my way to the Ca Rezzonico I had another ride in a traghetto. I was not entirely comfortable. There was lots of traffic in the Grand Canal, the water was a bit choppy, apart from the 2 oarsmen there were 3 other people who kept moving around as they took photos of each other ( they were Venetian, one had a visiting brother, so I suppose they knew what they were doing) . For 50cents it saved a lot of walking. See photo from a few days ago.
